U.S. Open 2012 Men's Results: Andy Murray Defeats Novak Djokovic, Wins First Grand Slam Title in Career

Tennis has its first British Grand Slam winner in 76 years after Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in five sets 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.

Murray was in complete shock as the umpire called the ball out as he held a 40-15 lead in the fifth set. Prior to the final point, Djokovic called a timeout that was not well received by fans as they booed at the defending 2011 U.S. Open champion.

It was obvious that the match had turned in Murray's favor and the announcers believed Djokovic was trying to ice Murray.

Murray broke Djokovic's serve making the score 5-2 and Murray had the opportunity to serve for match in the next game.

Undoubtedly, this was a match to remember.

Murray and Djokovic had a memorable first set as they went toe-to-toe in a tiebreak that needed 22 points to decide a victor. Murray won the 6-6 tiebreak 12-10 in a game that lasted about 20 minutes.

There was also a part in the first set where they went at it for a 54-shot rally.

The story for both players were their inconsistency throughout the match. Djokovic started by committing a lot of unforced errors, which allowed Murray to take the lead early in the first two sets.

Murray began struggling after holding a 4-0 lead in the second set as Djokovic rallied back and won 5 of 6 games to make it a match once again. The set was 5-5 as Djokovic rallied back to tie. Murray closed it out, but struggled in the third and fourth sets.

From then on Djokovic took control of the match. It was not until the last set when Murray turned things around that the match got out of hand for Djokovic.

For Murray, he became the first British player to win a grand slam championship since Fred Perry. With the victory, he also wins his first Grand Slam title as a professional.
