The Miami Dolphins needed to address both the running back and wide receiver positions this offseason after getting rid of a lot of their playmakers due to salary cap restraints. They have made headway in that effort trading for Kenny Stills and signing Greg Jennings to a contract earlier in the week, but the running back position remains a question mark. With the draft a week away, are the Dolphins favoring a running back in the first round over a wide receiver?
According to their recent pre-draft visits, the Dolphins could potentially be targeting a running back over a wide receiver in the first round. According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Melivin Gordon is coming to South Beach for a visit with the Dolphins while the Miami Herald is reporting Todd Gurley has also met with team officials for the Dolphins. Both running backs have seen their stock skyrockets as they could both be picked up in the first round. Miami owns the No. 14 pick and is in good position to land at least one of those two options.
It was previously reported the Dolphins could be targeting a move up the boards for a wide receiver. After letting go of most of their depth, the Dolphins were left with Jarvis Landry and Stills as their two main receivers. That is not enough to help Ryan Tannehill out. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Jennings signed a two-year contract while predicting that a trade up for either Amari Cooper or Kevin White could be an option for the Dolphins. Miami has worked out both receivers along with players like DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong and Phillip Dorsett. They stand a chance at getting the latter options in the second round.
The Dolphins need another running back. Right now, the team is putting all of their eggs in the Lamar Miller basket. The Herald previously reported that the Dolphins were open to the idea of bringing Knowshon Moreno back, but no contract negotiations have begun with the running back. Moreno is coming off another knee injury after signing just a one-year deal with the Dolphins. He has not been heard from much in free agency and fans should not expect his return. Gurley or Gordon would pair very well in the backfield with Miller for a solid running back tandem.
