2015 NFL Rookie of the Year: Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota Favorites Over Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley, Who Will Win Award?

May 06, 2015 09:58 AM EDT

The 2015 NFL Rookie of the Year award has some great candidates coming in for this season, with Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley, Kevin White and DeVante Parker all potential options to win and it comes after Odell Beckham took things on offense last season for the NY Giants after being a first round pick.

Beckham was injured to start the season, so many did not predict him to win it and now players like Mariota and Winston come in as the favorites. Winston is going to start from Day 1 and Mariota should as well, while names like Gordon and Gurley also could be prime candidates. White is with the Bears and will be a main option with Alshon Jeffery, while Parker is with the Dolphins and could emerge as a strong candidate.

Here is a look at some predictions we wrote last season just to see how wrong rookie predictions can be sometimes.

This is from the 2014 season. (Clowney ended up getting injured, so that surely did not work out for the Texans this year).

The 2014 NFL rookie class is shaping up to be one of the most talented in recent memory and names like Jadeveon Clowney, Khalil Mack, Johnny Manziel, Sammy Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Andre Williams, Odell Beckham and Justin Gilbert all could be in the mix to win respective offensive and defensive rookie of the year awards this season.

Clowney comes into the league after being the number one overall pick in the draft and he will have pressure to perform for a 2-14 team and he could be the favorite for the award while playing alongside JJ Watt, while other defensive players that could be good bets include Justin Gilbert, Khalil Mack and CJ Mosley. The offensive rookie of the year award should be a nice battle this year, as there is tons of talent from the first round and beyond, including players like Manziel, Cooks and Beckham. Some other players that could be in the mix from the later rounds include Ka'Deem Carey, Bishop Sankey, Jarvis Landry, Marqise Lee, Carlos Hyde and De'Anthony Thomas.

The NY Giants are thrilled about the potential of Beckham and he could be a very productive player for the team right out of the gate, as the G-Men lost Hakeem Nicks this offseason and needs more players to step up on offense. The Giants picked Beckham at number 12 overall in the first round and the team is expecting him to contribute on offense and on special teams and that is why he could be a good pick for rookie of the year. Beckham had a 109-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown while at LSU and he is an explosive player that could thrive alongside Victor Cruz in the offense with Eli Manning.

Prediction was: Mike Evans wins it on offense. Mack on defense. Close, but no cigar. Aaron Donald won on D, Beckham on offense.
