The New York Jets vowed to find more weapons for Geno Smith to work with in the upcoming season and the team held true to their word acquiring players like Devin Smith and Zac Stacy. Now the question becomes what the depth chart looks like as there are more position battles outside of the one brewing at the quarterback spot. While Smith is currently sitting at the top of the depth chart, the Jets are still working out where Smith and Stacy go.
According to the New York Post, the Jets are trying to figure out exactly where Smith will fit in the offense. The Jets traded for Brandon Marshall at the start of the offseason to pair with Eric Decker. They are the top two threats on the field. Then comes Jeremy Kerley who was praised by Chan Gailey and favored for that third role. That leaves Smith to compete with DeVier Posey and TJ Graham for the No. 4 spot and a position on the team.
Smith is doing everything he can to gain the upper hand. According to NJ.com, the receiver looked strong in rookie mini-camp over the weekend. Criticism surrounding Smith involves his lack of versatility, but according to the former Ohio State star, he can bring a lot to the table for New York.
I really don't worry about it, because I know how good I am," Smith said, via NJ.com. "I wouldn't be here, obviously, if I couldn't do anything. I felt whatever team picked me up, I was going to be able to fill that role. So I'm looking forward to it."
The running back position could also take an interesting turn. With Chris Ivory returning, the Jets signed Stevan Ridley in free agency. However, they also agreed to a trade for Zac Stacy which leaves the starter unknown. According to head coach Todd Bowles, the trade for Stacy does not factor into the role that Ridley will have. The issue is the former New England Patriot is coming off an injury. If he is not healthy to start the season, Stacy will get the first-team reps and potentially the starting job.
