Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Matt Forte Trade Option Over Adrian Peterson? Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson, Pierre Thomas Targets for Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle

In terms of "game-changing" running backs, Darren McFadden has yet to show that he is on. Running behind one of the league's best offensive lines could certainly help him gain that kind of status, but for now there is doubt surrounding the Dallas Cowboys' running back rotation as McFadden is projected to be the starter. With Jerry Jones toying with the idea of trading the team's 2016 first-round draft pick, could someone like Matt Forte be an option?

The Chicago Bears have denied that Forte is available for trades. However, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Forte is holding out of offseason workouts as Chicago is hesitant about giving the veteran a new contract. Entering the final year of his deal, Forte will be looking for security in his next contract. He will want multiple years on the deal which is simply unrealistic for running backs approaching 30.

This is where the Dallas Cowboys come in. For the time being, it does not appear Adrian Peterson is going anywhere. The Minnesota Vikings intend to hold on to the former MVP. The Cowboys are still toying with the idea of bringing on more running back depth despite voicing confidence in McFadden, Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams. Jones continues to be coy with the media about the team's intentions.

"I'd be reluctant to, but certainly if the right situation came along that could improve us now, with where we are with (35-year-old quarterback) Tony Romo, his career and where we are with what we've put together, it's a good time to go for it," Jones said, per Fox Sports Southwest.

As a result of his uncertain future, WindyCityGridiron.com makes the case that the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears should consider striking up a deal for Forte. The Cowboys time to win is now. Romo is not getting younger. Getting a running back like Forte installed to the offense could be what the team needs to truly replace DeMarco Murray and not lose a beat in the offense. Bears sources report that a first-round pick for Forte is more than generous for the aging running back. Dallas would like his salary more than Peterson's current cap hit.

Will the deal happen? It is highly unlikely both parties get something like this done, but the idea cannot be denied. Team vice president Stephen Jones admits that if the time comes, the Cowboys have a short-list of free agent running backs they will consider if need be. Players like Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson and Pierre Thomas are all available and waiting for an injury to take place. Dallas sounds more content with signing a cheap veteran rather than making a trade for another star.
