Premier League Rumors and News: Jay Rodriguez Signs Contract With Southampton After Manchester City, Tottenham Interest

May 13, 2015 09:12 AM EDT

Jay Rodriguez has signed a new deal to remain at Southampton and now the Premier League forward will look at having a big season in 2015-16 and he signed the four year contract after interest from both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Rodriguez has been dealing with an injury and has not been able to play after suffering a torn ACL, but reports have his recovery making progress and he has resumed working out. According to Pro Soccer Talk, the deal is for four years and Rodriguez comes in after missing the 2014 World Cup and the entire Premier League season.

Rodriguez suffered the injury at the end of last season and it extended into this year and now he is hoping for a strong return. Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said that Rodriguez could play before the season ends and that would be a great comeback for the forward after suffering the injury. PST reports that Man City and Tottenham had interest and there was a chance that Rodriguez could have left St. Mary's.

Rodriguez returns to the team after not playing since April 5 of last year when he suffered the injury. Rodriguez is the most notable player left from the starting lineup that day, with Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert now gone. Rodriguez also could end up back in action with England, as the team has Euro 2016 qualifiers coming up this summer.

"He's a good player and I think he will be an important player for next season," Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said last week, according to PST. "If he stays, I think that is a good signal to the club, to everybody."
