It was a dramatic game with a dramatic finish at Goodison Park as Newcastle and Everton finished their match in a 2-2 draw slashing Everton's hopes of taking third place in the standings. The officials had a lot to do with the outcome, but thanks to Demba Ba's two goals, Newcastle was able to escape the match with a point.
There was a lot of action in the closing minutes before stoppage time. Everton had taking a, what seemed to be, dominant 2-1 lead over Newcastle as Victor Anichebe scored in minute 87.
Minutes later however, Ba scored a tying goal from right inside the penalty area. Goalie Tim Howard expected a lob so he leaped, but Ba waited for the ball to settle a little lower before tapping in for the score. The ball went under the leaping Howard and the match was tied at 2.
For Everton, it is a tough draw to take since they lost out on goals because of the officials. Marouse Fellaini was called offsides on a questionable call. Fellaini had completed the play and had made a goal that would have given Everton the 2-1 lead.
Also, assistant referee down the line missed a goal by Anichebe that had crossed the goal line before getting cleared by Newcastle. No goal was called and therefore the match remained 1-1 despite Everton's efforts scoring two goals that looked pretty official.
With the draw, Everton tallies up seven points in their four games and remains part of the better half in the standings. With a win, they could have sat in third place. Newcastle is just two points behind Everton as they possess five points in the standings.
Looking ahead, Everton will play Swansea on Saturday. Newcastle meets with Norwich on Sunday.
