The Detroit Lions drafted Ameer Abdullah in the second round this year and he could push to start this year for Matthew Stafford along with Theo Riddick and Joique Bell, while Eric Ebron could be in for a big year along with Brandon Pettigrew, Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate on offense in 2015.
The Lions have signed Abdullah to a contract and he comes in after a strong career at Nebraska. According to ESPN.com, the Lions felt comfortable letting Reggie Bush go with Theo Riddick and Joique Bell coming back and now they have another option in Abdullah. The Lions rushing attack has never been all that great with Stafford at quarterback and now he has a natural runner in Abdullah.
Riddick and Bell have shown skills coming out of the backfield and now Abdullah can come in to help up the middle. Abdullah had some fumbling issues in college, but that can be fixed with coaching this summer. Abdullah was also strong coming out of the backfield, but he is a predictive runner and had 39 touchdowns and over 4500 rushing yards in his Huskers career. Ebron had a solid rookie season and he could push into the starting lineup this season.
The Lions allowed Reggie Bush to leave in free agency to the 49ers and now they could replace him with Abdullah in the lineup. The Lions felt comfortable letting him go with Riddick and Joique Bell on the roster and now Abdullah has the chance to come in and contribute as well. The team picked Laken Tomlinson in the first round at guard and he could start right away, while Alex Carter should help upgrade a depleted secondary.
With Bush gone Riddick will get the chance to step up as well and he comes in after rushing for 51 yards and adding 34 catches for 316 yards. Abdullah has a wide open chance to win the starting job, as both Bell and Riddick are not considered great up the middle runners. Abdullah went to Nebraska and he comes in after rushing for over 1100 yards in three straight seasons, including 1600 in the past two.
Carter adds a solid talent to the defense, while Tomlinson should help keep the offensive line strong up front for Stafford and the offense. Jim Caldwell did a bang up job last year and now he has another draft class to work with.
