The Seattle Seahawks are working on a contract extension with Russell Wilson this offseason and the two sides are currently not close to a deal and this comes as the team has come up in trade rumors regarding Michael Bennett and Bruce Irvin, as both players have contract issues heading into workouts and it comes after Frank Clark was drafted and could get a chance to start.
The Seahawks brought in Jimmy Graham in a trade this offseason and now Bennett and Irvin could be targets. According to the Seattle Times, Bennett is looking for a new contract and earlier in the offseason there were reports a deal to the Buccaneers could be an option. Irvin now also could be a trade target, as he did not have his fifth year contract option picked up by the team.
According to Black Sports Online, Irvin made comments that he will be "in Atlanta next season", as he would like to reunite with former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. After the contract option was not picked up, reports came out the Falcons could target Irvin in a trade. While that is looking unlikely now, Irvin could sign with the Falcons when he becomes a free agent.
Wilson is set to get a huge extension and he is in a better position than Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin for the moment, as he is set to be a free agent in 2016. Wilson was a third round pick and that means he is not dealing with a fifth year option and it set to sign now. According to the Seattle Times, the two sides are not currently close on a deal and there is a chance they could go into the season without an extension in place.
Luck may also get an extension and reports from NFL.com and other websites have the Seahawks possibly looking to guarantee the whole deal. The Seahawks have been lucky that Wilson has carried such a small cap hit over the past three years and now they may look at making his deal fully guaranteed to keep that down.
Irvin comes in after putting up over 16 sacks in his first three seasons, including six sacks last year in 15 games played. The team brought back Marshawn Lynch this offseason and they expect him to be as productive as he has been over the past few years despite the fact that he is getting up there in age. Lynch waffled with retirement and there was some trade talk this offseason, but he ended up signing back with the Seahawks.
According to Yahoo Sports, the Seahawks signed Lynch to a three-year, $31 million contract after a bit of a dispute between the sides. The team originally offered Lynch a two year contract that would pay him over $10 million for the 2015 season, but that did not take and eventually the two sides hammered things out. There were also reports that Lynch was considering retirement this offseason, but Carroll said that he was always confident a deal would get done and it did.
