The Buffalo Bills did not draft a quarterback this season which they might be starting to regret. Instead the team acquired Matt Cassel to challenge EJ Manuel who has yet to demonstrate much as an NFL pro. The Bills also have Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel, two quarterbacks that not exactly inspiring the confidence into the Bills' fan base at the moment. However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position, there is still a very good chance the Bills cut Manuel during training camp.
According to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW in Buffalo, the Bills are considering cutting Manuel by the end of training camp if they do not see serious progress in the quarterback during spring workouts. First, it seems unlikely this is the end result for Buffalo. The team spent a first-round pick on the quarterback two years ago which means they saw some value in him. The other issue is Manuel's contract which is fully guaranteed meaning the Bulls have to pay him the $2.8 million they still owe him regardless.
The doubt surrounding Manuel continues to grow, but the Bills have yet to do anything to help get past it. The team acquired LeSean McCoy. They signed Charles Clay to pair with Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods and Percy Harvin. They have tried to surround Manuel with as much talent as possible, but it does not appear to be making a difference at this time. If Manuel is released, Buffalo would have to go about trying to acquire someone else to help.
According to the Buffalo News, the Bills could target a few players via trades. Michael Vick and Matt Flynn are not likely options, but Mike Glennon, Zach Mettenberger and Kirk Cousins could be available for help. They have starting quarterback experience. There is no telling if they would be better options than Manuel, but they would at least help with depth. Buffalo could also target big names like Philip Rivers and Drew Brees who could be available come next year.
Despite the reports, keeping Manuel on the roster is doing no harm regardless of whether or not he starts for the team. The Bills could easily let go of Taylor and Tuel and add one of the players listed above to help out. Manuel might no longer be a starter, but he must be paid regardless.
