The New York Giants enter Thursday Night Football with a 1-1 record. They travel to North Carolina to face the Panthers who are also 1-1.
It will be a matchup of great quarterbacks, one who proved how elite he was and one attempting to be one of the best in the NFL.
Eli Manning continues to better his game, establishing himself as a true leader on the field for the Giants. He guided them back from an 11-point deficit in the second half as they scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to avoid an 0-2 start in 2012.
The Panthers got their first win of the season after defeating the New Orleans Hornets 35-27. Currently, Newton is doing it all. He is not having the incredible start he had last year in his first NFL season, but he is doing enough to have the Panthers in a winning position.
He is the leader behind center and he is their rushing leader. Newton has Steve Smith as his biggest threat on the outside. Newton has the big arm to finish big plays and Smith has always been a big time receiver.
It will be interesting to see how the Giants control Smith as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys proved that all it really takes is a dominant receiver to get to the Giants.
Josh Freeman had Vincent Jackson on the outside. Tony Romo had Kevin Ogletree. Both receivers murdered the Giants and went for 100-plus yards.
There is no question that the Giants need to step it up on defense. Will they show up against the Panthers who can depend on Newton to do it on the ground and through the air?
