Robinson Cano Tests Positive for PED's? No. Just False Rumors

Sep 20, 2012 05:24 PM EDT

Robinson Cano, New York Yankees second baseman, was rumored to having tested positive for taking performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Immediately, multple sources rebuked this false accusation.

This was the tweet that is believed to have sent off the alarm.

Can't confirm this but I'm hearing that Robinson #Cano tested positive for PEDs. Announcement from #MLB coming shortly.#Yankees

Pete Abraham, beat writer for the Boston Red Sox and Peter Gammons, columnist for MLB.com, denied these accusations and rumors. YankeesWFAN's Twitter account also said the rumors were false.

They tweeted, "Sweeny Murti ‏@YankeesWFANAs we just discussed on WFAN there is no truth to Cano rumor. And reporter who started this goose chase put it out with zero confirmation."

Cano spoke to the Daily News and said the rumors were false. He took the rumors well.

"You can't control what people say," Cano said. "There's a lot of negative stuff out there and I can't control that. I have to stay above that. There's been the same thing for a long time. It's something I can't control," said the second base all-star.

This is probably the worst time to start a rumor like this, but of course, now many will become suspicious. Cano, probably the best second baseman in Major League Baseball, is close friends with Melky Cabrera. Both players were young and are from the Dominican Republic. So they naturally bonded in the Yankees' clubhouse as they became acclimated to the Majors.

Cabrera was busted not too long ago for the use of PEDs. Bartolo Colon was also busted for the use of performance drugs and he is also Dominican.

Cano is one of the pure talents in the league, but the fact that his numbers took a dip following Cabrera's suspension, will not help his cause.

A player like Cano taking performance enhancements would be devastating for the league and Dominican players. The Dominican Republican is where some of baseball greats call home; Juan Marichal, Felipe Alou, Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero and probably the most famous player in recent years Sammy Sosa.

Sosa is already considered a cheater. Now there is Melky Cabrera, who was probably the front runner for this year's MVP. Adding Cano to this list would devastate the way Dominican players in the league are looked.

Following this rumor, many will question Cano's performance and how he grew into such a great hitter.

Hopefully, they will forget about it and hopefully, for the sake of baseball and Dominican players in the majors and coming up, it is all just a rumor.
