Liverpool finally found their goalscoring touch with a 5-3 win over Swiss team Young Boys in the Europa League, as Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United were held to 0-0 draws by Lazio and Maritimo respectively.
Defending champions Atletico Madrid started their group campaign in style with a comfortable 3-0 away victory over Hapoel Te Aviv -- the man of the moment Radamel Falcao -- surprisingly, not getting on the scoresheet. Marseille fought back from going two goals down, to salvage a 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce, while there were wins for Napoli and Bordeaux.
Yuto Nagatomo scored a late equalizer to give Inter Milan a 2-2 draw with Rubin Kazan at the San Siro while last year's runners-up Athletic Bilbao needed a 40th minute goal from Markel Susaeta to eke out a 1-1 draw against Israeli side Ironi Kiryat Shmona. But there was no such luck for Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, who fell 2-0 to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
In Switzerland, a much changed Liverpool side, which had three debutants, including two teenagers, played out an entertaining 5-3 win against Young Boys.
The first goal came in the most bizarre of circumstances, when Stewart Downing's harmless looking cross was met by Dusan Veskovac. The defender looked to clear the cross with his head, but unfortunately saw the ball cannon off his defensive partner Juhani Ojala's head and into the net.
The Brendan Rodgers' style of passing and keeping possession was hardly visible in the first 30 minutes, with Young Boys doing most of the attacking, albeit without much effect. Young Boys, however, got the goal they were looking for in the 38th minute when Raphael Nuzzolo scored off a mistake from Jose Enrique.
19-year-old left-back Andre Wisdom put Liverpool back in front two minutes later, before two goals from the home side - Ojala (52) and Gonzalo Zarate (63) - gave Young Boys a 3-2 lead just past the hour mark.
Central defender Sebastian Coates equalized in the 67th minute through a header, with the impressive Jonjo Shelvey scoring a brace to give Liverpool all three points.
