Despite the contract drama surrounding him, Russell Wilson is still the man in Seattle. The Seahawks quarterback will still walk out and go under center Week 1 like usual. However, behind Wilson there are a lot of question marks. Since his rookie season, Wilson has been the assumed starter and the Seahawks have gotten lucky with his lack of injuries. 2015 is expected to be no different, but the depth behind Wilson leaves a lot to be desired which could cause the Seahawks to look at the free agent marker.
Right now BJ Daniels and RJ Archer as assigned as backups to Wilson. That is not the most ideal scenario for any team. According to John Clayton of ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks could be a landing spot for Michael Vick come training camp. Vick continues to stress that he wants to play for several more years and believes in himself as a quarterback. The issue is that right now no one else does and Vick might have to wait for an injury to take place before getting a chance.
Clayton writes that Vick could actually be the ideal backup for Wilson. The veteran is a proven leader while still having success on the field. The Seahawks are currently pushing a deal for Tarvaris Jackson, but if that fails due to money demands, Vick could be in. He has no leverage to demand anything more than a minimum deal, but joining a team like the Seahahwks could give Vick the chance to at least be in a good environment.
The Seahawks will not shell out money for a backup. Right now the team is knee deep in talks with Wilson and those are getting nowhere. With Ryan Tannehill and Cam Newton both under new contracts, Wilson is next in line. In an effort to push things along, Wilson's agent Mark Rodgers wrote a 16-page letter to the Seahawks stating his position in the negotiations according to Terry Blount of ESPN. According to Wilson, he is fully prepared to play the upcoming season without a deal in place.
"I'm prepared for that 100 percent if that's the case," Wilson said, via ESPN.com. "I want to be here for a long time. I just have to get ready to play. I love the game, and I love being out here with these guys. Ultimately, I just take it one day at a time and see where it takes me."
Ian Rapoport is also reporting that Bobby Wagner is beginning talks for his new contract, while Bruce Irvin will not be receiving a new deal along with Michael Bennett. Wilson and Wagner will either each get a new contract or both will be forced to wait until next year.
