The FIFA Women's World Cup opened up group play this week and on Monday the United States won over Australia to start off their campaign with a victory and now the team will prepare for their next match following the 3-1 win.
Hope Solo was strong in net and Megan Rapinoe had two goals for the team to take down Australia. The Group D standings has the USA team on top with three points, while Nigeria and Sweden each have one point and Australia is in last with zero. Nigeria and Sweden played to a draw and now the Group D play will continue on the schedule.
Rapinoe scored early in the first half, but the Americans were sluggish and they allowed Australia to tie things up. Australian forward Lisa De Vanna was able to get a shot past Solo following a nice pass in front of the box and the game was tied heading into the second half. The Americans were able to get things going after the strong first half for the Aussies and Christen Press put a shot in for a 2-1 lead for Team USA.
Rapinoe added another goal in the 78th minute and that put the game out of reach and she ended up being named player of the game after scoring two goals. Solo is dealing with some media issues off the field right now, but on the field she was strong and she was able to stop Australia from scoring early in the match and also had some key saves in the second half.
Alex Morgan played a little in the match despite dealing with a knee bruise and if she gets better she could get some minutes in the next match for the team. The US Women play against Sweden on June 12 for their next match and they have Nigeria for their final group play match on June 16.
