Several NFL quarterbacks are waiting to get paid. The Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers began to set the market with contracts to Ryan Tannehill and Cam Newton respectively and now it is the jobs of the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks to step up and pay their guys. Earlier in the offseason, the Colts were rumored to have a contract for Andrew Luck in place , but now that appears to not be case as the team might force the quarterback to wait a year.
According to owner Jim Irsay, the Colts have nothing new to report on the contract front for Luck. The Tannehill and Newton deals certainly showed where the market is headed, but the Colts have no intentions of rushing the negotiations and getting a deal done as fast as possible.
"Nothing [new] right now on Andrew," Irsay said, via Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star. "We know we're going to get him done and he's going to be here for a very long time."
This differs from a report by ESPN earlier in the offseason stating the Colts were preparing to "break the bank" on a contract for Luck. NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported the deal could make Luck the highest-paid player in the league earning $25 million per season. However, the Indianapolis Star quickly followed that up saying it no longer appeared that Luck would be signing a contract this offseason and would instead play through his fifth-year option.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com makes the case to get Luck signed now instead of waiting. They could take the route of the Dolphins and drop a huge offer now for Luck to sign. Next year, the contract could cost them more money if Wilson signs and then Luck has a big season. That will drive his price even higher.
The next contract presumably to be finished is a deal for Wilson. The Seattle Seahawks have been pushing negotiations with the quarterback over the past week. Reports differ almost every day in regards to where they are, but his contract will have the most impact on what Luck earns along with players like Robert Griffin III who just had his fifth-year option picked up. Wilson has remained confident regarding his contract status, stating he is prepared to play regardless. The Seahawks have a lot of contracts to get done for players like Bobby Wagner, Bruce Irvin and Michael Bennett. The Colts are in a similar situation as TY Hilton is looking to become the next top receiver to get his contract.
