Detroit Lions Rumors and News: Garrett Gilbert Claimed After Patriots Release

Jun 13, 2015 01:07 PM EDT

The Detroit Lions have brought in Garrett Gilbert after his release from the New England Patriots and now he could compete with Kellen Moore for the third spot behind Matthew Stafford and Dan Orlovsky at quarterback.

Gilbert was waived by the Patriots this past week after the team brought in Matt Flynn on a contract and now he is with another team after being drafted by the Ras last year. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Lions claimed Gilbert off of waivers after he was released by the Patriots and he could get the chance to battle with Kellen Moore for the third string quarterback job in training camp.

The Patriots added Flynn as a backup or potential starter with Tom Brady facing suspension, as Jimmy Garoppolo may get the chance to start. Dave Birkett reports that the Lions let fourth quarterback Anthony Boone go to make room for Gilbert and he comes in after spending time on practice squads with the Rams and Patriots last year.

Gilbert was drafted out of SMU last year in the sixth round by the Rams and now he is with his third team. Orlovsky is the backup for Stafford and Boone was previously signed as an undrafted free agent out of Duke.
