Rangers Magic Number: Texas Three Games From Clinching AL West After Win on Thursday

Sep 27, 2012 05:19 PM EDT

The Texas Rangers pounded the Oakland Athletics and went on to win 9-4 on Thursday in Arlington Ballpark. With the victory, the Rangers extend their lead back to four games over the A's and reduce their magic number to three.

Going into the game their magic number sat at five, but thanks to a quick start by the offense, the Rangers were able to cruise to victory with a few bumps on the road.

Ian Kinsler got the offense started with a leadoff solo shot for the Rangers in the bottom of the first. It was No. 19 of the year. The Rangers added four more in the inning fueled by a Michael Young two-run single and an opposite field two-run homer by Mike Napoli.

Every time the A's scored a run, the Rangers answered back with one of their own. Through the first four innings Texas put up at least a run on the board.

Things got a little scary late in the game as the Athletics went for the comeback. With Mike Adams on the mound, Yoenis Cespedes smacked a no-doubter over the left field wall for a solo shot. Following a strikeout, Adams gave up a home run to Brandon Moss to make it 9-6. Finally, Reddick hit a line drive over the right field fence for his second of the game and made the game 9-7.

Joe Nathan got the save and Matt Harrison earned the win, No. 18 of his 2012 season. He gave up four runs through six innings and struck out two Athletics.

The Rangers will stay at home and host the Los Angeles Angels. Meanwhile the Athletics' fly home to face the Seattle Mariners.

By no means are things wrapped up in the A.L. West. The Angels are not an easy win, but the Athletics could sweep the Mariners. The A's and Rangers will then meet again in their final series of the year.
