With the NBA finals officially over, the focus is now on free agency and once again Kevin Love's name is coming up. Regardless of how many times the forward states that he plans on returning to Cleveland in 2015, most NBA sources believe he could still opt out and test the market. Love would be the priority for a number of teams if he truly becomes available, so would the Boston Celtics re-think trying to target him?
According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com, Love will opt out of his player option. The question is whether or not Love plans on re-signing with the Cavaliers or testing the open market. Love has stated time and time again that he will be in uniform for Cleveland on opening night next season, but his contract is still an issue. The Cavaliers have several players needing new deals this upcoming season and have to decide how to best handle the pay roll.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Tristan Thompson is the first priority for the team as he will be a restrict free agent this offseason. Thompson is expected to command a max contract which could throw everything off. If Love does plan on opting out, but staying in Cleveland, he could simply sign a one-year deal and then wait until 2016 to get his max contract when the new tv deals take place. Regardless, there will be a very small window for teams to pounce on the forward.
The Boston Celtics have been considered a favorite to land Love for a year now. The team attempted to win the trade battle last offseason, but failed. According to the Boston Herald, the Celtics had wiped their hands clean of Love after he made it clear he would be returning to Cleveland, but if he opts out Boston could try to make a big push and sign him.
The Celtics have a lengthy wish of free agents they are eyeing this offseason. According to JournalTimes.com, LaMarcus Aldridge is out, but Greg Monroe and Marc Gasol are still in. The team has also been linked to shooters like Monta Ellis to help the offense. Love would be a huge upgrade for the Celtics while pairing with Marcus Smart and whatever elite big man they acquire in the draft or free agency.
The Celtics are still eyeing draft trades. According to A.Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com, the Celtics like either Justise Winslow or Willie Cauley-Stein in a move up the boards. While it is a big stretch, if the Celtics can pull off a draft trade and somehow yank Love away from Cleveland, they would be immediate contenders next season.
