The Sacramento Kings could be an active team this summer and a trade for Ty Lawson with the Denver Nuggets for the sixth overall pick in the draft is a potential move and this comes as the team is trying to build around DeMarcus Cousins and they could target players like Goran Dragic, Rajon Rondo, DeMarre Carroll and Monta Ellis on the free agent market.
The Kings have cap space coming into the summer and the team has reportedly been interested in trading down in the first round of the draft, as they are not in the top five. According to Chad Ford of ESPN, the Denver Nuggets have been looking to deal Lawson and the team is trying to get a deal done with the Sacramento Kings. Lawson has been mentioned in trade rumors since the deadline this past season and NESN.com reported this offseason that the Celtics could be interested.
Ford writes that the Nuggets have struggled to find a deal for Lawson and also that the team has been eager to move up in the first round of the draft. The draft is not considered to be a particularly deep one in the eyes of most NBA scouts and that is why the Kings may look at trading back. The team is in need of a point guard with Darren Collison coming off of hip surgery and head coach George Karl previously had Lawson in Denver.
Ford writes that the Nuggets have not been able to generate much interest in Lawson and the Kings likely would want more than just the point guard for the number six pick. The Kings have some cap space coming into the summer and they could handle the salaries for Lawson of $12,404,495 and $13,213,482 the next two seasons. The Knicks also could be interested in Lawson, according to Frank Isola at the Daily News. UPDATE: While the team has said DeMarcus Cousins is not being traded, Marc Stein reports that the LA Lakers are trying to trade for Cousins in a three team deal.
The Kings may look at free agency as a better option to improve at point guard, as players like Rajon Rondo and Goran Dragic are hitting the market. Dragic is likely a longshot, but the team came up in reports for the point guard this year at the trade deadline and they could pick up on that again. According to the Boston Globe, the Kings are a "darkhorse location" for Rondo to land, as he has a relationship with Rudy Gay and the team has a need at point guard. The Kings could look at Rondo if the Nuggets-Lawson deal does not go through.
DeMarcus Cousins has been mentioned as a potential trade target for teams this offseason, including the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. The Kings have said that they are not shopping Cousins and the team could be active this offseason as they try and build back a winning team around Cousins. Rondo is not likely going back to Dallas after his trade to the Mavericks this season and the Kings could use their cap space to give Rondo a lucrative short-term deal. Washburn writes that Rondo could be interested in a shorter deal with the salary cap rising over the next few years.
