Five months after back surgery, newly acquired Los Angeles Lakers All-Star center Dwight Howard is determined to make his Laker debut for opening night for the 2012-13 season against the Dallas Mavericks.
Howard, 26, underwent surgery in April, and missed the final weeks of the season and the playoffs for the Orlando Magic. After Howard insisted he wouldn't re-sign a long-term contract, Orlando traded him to Los Angeles as part of a four-team deal in August.
There have been questions surrounding Howard's return, but with recent reports that suggest his progress has strengthened the possibility of his return by the debut is likely.
Howard has indicated that his back has returned to 85 percent strength, sources said. Due to the severity of the injury, Howard would still need doctor's clearance to engage in full training-camp activities with the Lakers, who start training camp on Tuesday.
The Lakers have remained reluctant to make a public timetable on Howard's return, and have maintained a cautious approach to protect his long-term health.
Howard continues to work with Lakers coaches and trainers at the team's practice facility, but has yet to engage in five-on-five or significant contact situations.
