The Miami Marlins have lost Giancarlo Stanton until August after the outfielder suffered a broken hand and now fantasy baseball owners will have to find some replacements for the home run leader and this comes as Steven Matz has gotten the call-up from the New York Mets as they try a six-man rotation.
Stanton was injured against the Los Angeles Dodgers and now he will be out for over a month with a "broken hamate bone," according to Hardball Talk. The news was first reported by Fox Sports and Stanton had x-rays after the game that confirmed the injury. MLB.com reports that Stanton first started feeling "discomfort" in his hand after a swing-and-miss in the sixth inning while hitting against Brett Anderson.
Stanton struck out and he looked to be in pain and later in the game he had another at-bat and did not look comfortable gripping the bat at all. Stanton has been one of the best players in the majors this season and he is leading the league with 27 home runs and 67 RBI. Stanton will have surgery on the hand and he will be out for 4-6 weeks, according to ESPN.com. Fantasy baseball owners have been relying on Stanton for consistent production all season and now
The New York Mets are starting to work a six man rotation and according to Adam Rubin at ESPN, the team is calling up Steven Matz to make his first career start. According to Rubin, Matz will start on Sunday and the team will begin using a six man rotation to help limit the innings of starters Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard. Matz has been pitching well at Las Vegas in Triple-A and has put up a 2.19 ERA.
Matz is a fantasy option to pick up for anyone in need of a starter with players like James Paxton and Jake Odorizzi on the DL. Matt Moore is coming back for the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Blue Jays are bringing up prospect Matt Boyd and he is another player fantasy owners should watch out for. Boyd has been strong in the minors and he has a 1.10 ERA in 73 innings.
