The Seattle Mariners lost Robinson Cano to an injury on a freak play against the Anaheim Angels on Saturday night, as the second baseman was hit on the head by a baseball that sailed into the dugout on an errant throw from the Angels warming up before an inning and he reportedly did not suffer a concussion.
According to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Cano suffered a contusion on the side of his head after getting hit and Hardball Talk reports he was "shaky" after the incident. Cano has been struggling overall this season, hitting just .244 with four home runs and 24 RBI. Cano was 0-for-3 in the game before the ball hit him in the head and he was replaced by Willie Bloomquist in the field at second base. UPDATE: Cano is in the lineup on Sunday.
Divish reports that Cano did not suffer a concussion after being checked out by the medical staff and he went through the MLB concussion protocol. Divish reports that Cano is "day-to-day with a contusion on his forehead" and the team will wait and see how it progresses before Cano plays again. Cano left the game after dealing with dizziness following the errant throw.
The Mariners have been struggling overall this season after coming into 2015 with playoff expectations. The team finished one game out of the wild card in the American League last year and won 87 games for one of the best improvements in MLB. Cano has been scuffling and he has been looking to get into a groove and now that could be delayed with this injury. The Mariners are likely not making any more big trades at the deadline, as they have already brought in Mark Trumbo in a deal with the Diamondbacks.
