The Dallas Cowboys are trying to work out a contract with Dez Bryant this offseason and there is a chance the wide receiver could hold out in training camp if a deal doesn't get done and this comes as his agent met with the team for the first time in months, while the Cowboys may have Joseph Randle as the starter over Darren McFadden coming into camp.
Bryant and the team are not close on a deal right now and they have until the middle of July to get a deal done. According to ESPN.com, the Cowboys and Bryant's agent Tom Condon met for the first time in months and that could get the wheels moving on a deal. The Cowboys are hoping to get Bryant in on a "team-friendly" deal, according to Pro Football Talk. Bryant had a monster season and he has the chance to sign a one year deal on the franchise tag tander.
Bryant is coming of a season in which he had 1320 yards on 88 catches with 16 touchdowns and he now has had at least 1200 yards in two straight seasons. Bryant is a dominant player and with the way the offenses have developed, the wide receiver looks to be the priority. Bryant was first in the league in receiving touchdowns and was the top threat for Romo this past season. The franchise tag would cost over $12 million for Bryant and Jones said the preference is to work out a deal.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the team is not releasing Brandon Carr, but the Cowboys would like the cornerback to have his cap hit lowered moving forward. Carr could take a pay cut, but so far he has resisted that. The team drafted Byron Jones and the Cowboys also have Orlando Scandrick and Morris Claiborne on the roster and they need improvement from Carr in the secondary.
Bryant has not yet signed a contract for this year and there is a chance he could hold out over the summer while the two sides negotiate. Bryant was hit with the franchise tag and that means he has until July to agree to a long term deal with the Cowboys. Bryant has the option of signing a one year tender and ESPN Dallas reporter Todd Archer speculates that the receiver will end up on that deal over a long term contract.
The Cowboys let DeMarco Murray go in free agency this offseason and Jones said after the draft that the team is "comfortable" with the running backs on the roster. According to Fox Sports, Jerry Jones was asked about the running back situation and while he expressed confidence in McFadden as the starter, he left the door open about a trade for a player at the position.
Jones was asked about the potential for a move and he "didn't rule out" trading a pick in 2016 to get a running back now "if the right situation came along." The Cowboys had a strong draft this year after taking Byron Jones and Randy Gregory with their first two picks and Jones sees those two as valuable selections. The team also signed La'el Collins as an undrafted free agent after he projected as a first round pick.
