The New York Jets may receive new today that wide receiver Santonio Holmes may be out for the remainder of the season.
The results of the diagnostic test won't be released until later today, but the expectation is that his foot injury is season-ending.
The injury Holmes sustained is a Lisfranc injury, or basically torn ligaments in the mid-foot area. Injuries such as this often require surgery and takes several months of recovery time.
Holmes was injured on the first play of the fourth quarter in Sunday's 34-0 shut-out loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The injury occurred after he caught a short pass in the flat and, as he turned upfield to run, his left foot got caught in the turf. He was helped off the field by way of a golf cart, and left the stadium carrying crutches and wearing a walking boot on his foot.
With Holmes' injury, the Jets now only have three healthy receivers on the roster after they released Patrick Turner on Tuesday. Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens are the starters, with Clyde Gates as a reserve. Rookie Stephen Hill was absent in the game with the 49ers due to a hamstring injury, as did tight end Dustin Keller, but Keller is most likely to return for Monday night's game against the Houston Texans.
The loss of Holmes would be a devastating blow to the Jets after already losing their best defensive player, cornerback Darrelle Revis, to a season-ending knee injury.
