The New York Jets are trying to make the most productive offense for 2015. Much of that hinges on the rise or fall of Geno Smith at the quarterback position, but New York is doing their best to help out by adding the best offensive weapons. The Jets got things rolling by trading for Brandon Marshall and then adding Devin Smith in the draft. Could their improvements force other roster changes come training camp?
According to the New York Post, one new change on the field will be the adjustment of Jace Amaro. As a rookie, Amaro thrived as a tight end for the Jets, looking like an emerging star. He put up 345 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games which is considered a win in last year's offense. However, now offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is moving in to H-back in order to help improve his potential.
Amaro's blocking left a lot to be desired and he was not comfortable being an in-line tight end. As a result, the Jets are moving him to H-back while also potentially using him as a slot or wing receiver. He could easily line up with Eric Decker and Marshall while Smith works in as the fourth option. That leaves a big question mark around Jeremy Kerley who is fighting for field time. According to the New York Daily News, the Jets will not trade or release Kerley this season in order to utilize his depth, but his future outlook in New York is not good and this season could help determine it.
The same can be said for the running back position. The Jets signed Stevan Ridley to a deal despite his knee injury suffered last season. Ridley has been an unknown so far with the Jets. The running back was unable to compete much in OTAs and minicamp as he continues to recover. If other players excel in his spot, Ridley could be done sooner rather than later.
According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Zac Stacy and Chris Ivory are fighting for that starting job with the Jets. Stacy was traded after the St. Louis Rams drafted Todd Gurley and he could end up seeing a lot of playing time if Ridley is not healthy. Stacy told the media that he is looking forward to the chance to prove himself in New York.
"There's always competition everywhere, but I think the move to the Jets was what's best for me," Stacy said, via ESPN.com. "Coming into a system that obviously has competition going in, but has good opportunities as well. Thought it was a best fit for me to move to Jersey. At the end of the day, it was the best decision for me. With the situation, like I said, this was the best, ideal situation for me in terms of opportunity. With the situation in St. Louis, I felt my opportunities were limited."
