Oct 03, 2012 10:33 PM EDT

The New York Yankees claimed their 18th career American League East title after a monstrous 14-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.

By the time they hit the seventh inning, the Yankees knew they were the champs of the East. Alex Rodriguez was startled by the cheers and had to step out of the box as the crowd roared when the Tampa Bay Rays finished off the Baltimore Orioles in Tropicana Field.

Despite the win by Tampa Bay, the Yankees would have clinched on their own.

Curtis Granderson opened up the scoring with a three-run blast to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. However, the story of the game was Robinson Cano who went 4-4 with two homers and six RBI in the game. Granderson finished with two homers and four RBI.

Hiroki Kuroda had a great outing. He went seven innings and gave up two earned runs. He struck out four and walked two.

The Yankees will now wait for Friday's Wild Card Game between the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers.

Depending on the winner, the Yankees will fly out for the first two games of the division series as the Wild Card Game winner will host the first game of the series.

The American League Division Series starts on Sunday, Oct 7.
