The schedule and teams are set for the N.L. Wild Card Game. The Atlanta Braves will host the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday as the N.L. needs its one last piece to complete the NLDS bracket.
Kris Medlen will be taking the mound for the Braves on Friday. He will face the Cardinals' Kyle Lohse.
In case you have not been keeping up with the N.L. East, Medlen has probably been the best pitcher in baseball.
Let's just put it like this, in his penultimate start, which was against the Florida Marlins, Medlen gave up three runs over seven innings for his worst outing of the season.
He is 10-1 in 50 appearances this season, 12 of which have been starts. More importantly for the Braves as a team, they have won 23-straight games behind Medlen.
Now, let's not forget about those Cardinals. This is the same team, minus a few pieces, that came back in 2011 to take the one Wild Card spot available and ultimately won the World Series.
Lohse has pitched well down the stretch with the exception of two outings where he gave up four or more runs.
Despite struggling as a team late in the season, the Cardinals punched their ticket to the one-game playoff after the Los Angeles Dodgers could not win and seize the second spot in the Wild Card.
The Braves were 5-1 during the season against the Cardinals during the regular season, but that record stays in the regular season. All it takes is one game to advance and win.
The Braves will be playing in honor of Chipper Jones who retires at the end of the season. You better believe his teammates want him to go out with a bang. The Cardinals will be playing as the defending World Champions.
The winner of the N.L. Wild Card Game will face the Washington Nationals in the NLDS.
