Gold Cup 2015 Results and Schedule: USA Wins Over Honduras, CONCACAF Group Standings, United States Tries To Defend Title

The United States opened up the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a victory against Honduras with two goals from Clint Dempsey to get the 2-1 victory in Texas on Tuesday night and is comes as Team USA is looking to defend its title at the tournament after winning back in 2013.

Dempsey scored on a header in the 25th minute after a sluggish start by the Americans and he added a second goal later in the game. The first goal came off of a save by the Donis Escober, as Dempsey was there for the rebound after the shot deflection from Jozy Altidore's attempt. Dempsey scored again in the 64th minute after a free kick by Michael Bradley.

The 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup started on July 7 and the tournament has the United States defending its title from the 2013 event and they opened group play against Honduras and those matches will extend to July 18, which is when the knockout stage is on the schedule.

The Group standings are opening with the United States, Panama, Haiti and Honduras in Group A, while Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica and Canada are in Group B. Mexico, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba are in Group C and there will also be a consolation match this year for third place. The United States has Honduras to start and they play against Haiti on July 10 and then against Panama on July 13.

The knockout stage has eight teams coming out of the groups and the games open on July 18 in Baltimore. The July 19 games will be in East Rutherford and the semifinals will be in Atlanta. Philadelphia hosts the final on July 26, while Chester has the third place game on July 25. The United States are in Group A, so that means they will play in either Baltimore or East Rutherford depending on how things play out. The team is favored in their group.
