After losing nine of their last 13 games, the Texas Rangers find themselves back in the post season as they host the Baltimore Orioles in an AL Wild Card game in Arlington, Texas at 8:37 p.m. ET.
The Rangers were denied their third straight AL West title and a chance at the top overall record in the league when they were swept by the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.
Now they have to survive in the wild card round, a place where many didn't expect to see the Rangers fall to.
"I'm not frustrated, I'm just disappointed," manager Ron Washington said. "We played all year to win a division and we didn't get it done. Especially the way it happened, it's disappointing. We put our backs to the wall and we have to win one game. We're capable of winning one game. If we can do that, you never know what will happen."
Meanwhile, Baltimore is in the playoffs for the first time in 15 years and enter the game as the all-around underdog.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter, who was hired midway through the 2010 season, was the former manager of the Rangers before being replaced by Ron Washington at the end of the 2006 season. He dismissed any notion that the game against his former club means more to him than any other game.
"For our players and organization to get an opportunity, it's rewarding. We're trying to do everything possible to get back to Baltimore," Showalter said. "Personally, I thanked the players for letting me come along for the ride."
