The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-2 in Game 1 of the ALDS on Sunday.
They say better late than never and the Yankees bats woke up right before the Orioles had a chance to win it in the ninth. Russell Martin led the surge with a solo home run to left field off of the Orioles' closer Jim Johnson.
The homer unknotted a 2-2 tie that had held for more than four innings, despite both teams threatening throughout the game.
The Yankees added four more runs in that inning. Two RBI came off the bat of Robinson Cano that scored Ichiro and Derek Jeter.
CC Sabathia surprised in his start going almost the whole nine. He threw 8.2 innings, gave up eight hits, one walk and struck out seven.
It is a great sign for the Yankees as Sabathia is the team's ace and has been a horrible pitcher in his postseason career extending to his time with the Cleveland Indians. The last time Sabathia pitched this well in the playoffs the Yankees won the World Series in 2009.
Throught out the night, the Orioles were standing around waiting for the walk. Sabathia painted the corners and mixed up speeds. keeping the Orioles off balance as they squandered multiple opportunities.
The O's left seven runners on base and were just 2-9 with runners in scoring position.
Game 2 will be tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET in Baltimore. Come back tomorrow as we will have a preview of the pitching matchups.
