Ty Lawson is getting trade interest this summer and teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers could be options for the Denver Nuggets, as the team is shopping the point guard after drafting Emmanuel Mudiay and signing Jameer Nelson in free agency.
Lawson is dealing with some off the court issues after getting a second DUI and that appears to be the final straw for the Nuggets. According to the Denver Post, the team is considering waiving Lawson, but the Nuggets will look for a trade before doing that. There appears to be some interest on the trade market for Lawson, but the Nuggets may have to lower their price after the latest bad headline for the point guard.
According to SI.com, Chris Mannix reports that the Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets are potential landing spots for Lawson. The Brooklyn Nets could be a fit after Deron Williams was bought out, while the Sixers have cap space and could put in a waiver claim if it comes to that. Mannix writes that the Lakers, Rockets and Pistons have shown the most early interest, but that a deal is not close right now.
The Lakers have Jordan Clarkson and D'Angelo Russell looking good in the Summer League, but the team may want a veteran option on the roster. The team let Jeremy Lin leave for the Hornets and Lawson could be an option if the Nuggets want to sell low. The Lakers are looking to add some more talent this summer, while the Rockets have Patrick Beverley back but need a backup point guard. The team has looked into Jason Terry and now they could go after Lawson with some vigor.
The Pistons are an interesting option, as the team has Reggie Jackson back on a big deal, but Brandon Jennings is also on the roster. The team could consider trying to move Jennings to bring in Lawson and that would give the team some solid depth at one-two at point guard as they try and bounce back this season. Lawson was productive for the Nuggets last season, averaging 15.2 points per game and putting up 9.6 assists per game and that was a career high for the guard.
While Lawson's contract is a bit pricey with two years and $25 million left, Mannix writes that his numbers pale when comparing to Jackson, who got $80 million and also to Wes Matthews, who is getting $70 million. Lawson may be a risky option, but teams may not have to give up much to get him and that could make it worth pulling off.
