NFL Season 2015 Preview: Can Adam Gase be Quarterback Whisperer For Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears?

Jul 22, 2015 01:40 PM EDT

Jay Cutler by all accounts is a difficult guy to be around. As a fan it's difficult to watch him throw multiple interceptions in games, as a coach it's difficult to have him tell you to get out of his face, in a less dignified manner. As a player it's frustrating to be around a quarterback who seemingly does not care about his teammates.

Adam Gase knows this however he has said the start of he and Cutler's relationship has been seemingly "comfortable". Gase had only amicable things to say about Cutler before the season starts but a lot of coaches have, take for example Mike Martz who said working with Cutler was a "dream". It was a dream until Cutler accused Martz of running an offensive system that is obsolete in the modern NFL. In 2012 Mike Tice said that his relationship with Cutler was "great' but by the end of the season the two were not speaking. Cutler is a fickle guy who is not afraid to show his displeasure.

Cutler has been an interception machine for years so it is hard to say whether or not he will ever be great. Offensive coordinators need to limit his mistakes and take some control away from him because that is the only way Cutler will not make a game ending mistake. Cutler in 2014 was worse than Drew Stanton, Geno Smith, and Shaun Hill at giving away games to opposing teams. Cutler fails at reading plays constantly and this hinders how he can use the Bear's offensive weapons.

Gase was the mastermind behind Tim Tebow's success on the Broncos. He is also the man who helped Peyton Manning learn the Bronco's offense, now he has to help Jay Cutler and a Bears offense with a ton of weapons.  Cutler's quarterback rating was an above average 88.6 but he still threw 18 interceptions almost reaching a career high. If Gase wants to succeed with Cutler, Cutler will need to listen and trust his offensive coordinator which is something that hasn't been seen in over four seasons.
