NFL Training Camp News: Can Randy Gregory Channel Jason Taylor and Become Elite For Dallas Cowboys?

Jul 24, 2015 12:42 PM EDT

Randy Gregory fell in the 2015 draft due to off the field concerns; now one concern seems to be on the forefront of analysts, his weight.

Scouts were worried that he was to light to play a pass rusher however his stats in college appear to show otherwise. Gregory was 235, 240 in college and produced at a very high level. If any coach were to teach Gregory the right fundamentals as a pass rusher it would be Rod Marinelli the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator. Dallas has already expressed that they would like Gregory to have a camp weight of over 250, to which Gregory responded by bulking up significantly and now is only ten pounds away from his goal.

Gregory had this to say about being a lighter defensive end, "I think I actually did OK playing at the weight that I played at in college," Gregory said. "I was 235, 240 pretty much my whole college career. I've heard people say that I played bigger than my actual weight. I think if people actually sit down and watch game film, they'll see that I don't actually get pushed around as much as people say I do. I think people just assume, 'He has a light body. He's a pass rusher. He must not be a good run defender.' But I think if you ask anybody on the staff, Coach (Rod) Marinelli or anybody else, they'll tell you I'm doing a good job setting the edge and added weight is only going to help me. So I'm planning to add more."

If Gregory avoids the pitfalls of NFL stardom unlike Dion Jordan he can excel at his position. Jason Taylor is a good example of technique out weighing natural body type. If Marinelli can teach Gregory how to be an effective rusher in the NFL we might be seeing a hall of famer bloom right in front of our eyes.
