The Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox meet up as both teams are under fire with the trade deadline quickly approaching. Both the Tigers and Red Sox are realizing that they are not going to be contending for the playoffs this season so now they become sellers at the deadline offering up some of their biggest pieces that may or may not be playing during this series.
The Detroit Tigers have made David Price available in trades which has the pitcher sitting on the bench wondering if he is headed anywhere. The former Cy Young winner is in the last year of his contract and according to the Detroit Free Press, he has no intentions of re-signing with the Tigers at the end of the season. Now the team is hoping to get something in return for him at the deadline while interest includes the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Boston Red Sox are preparing to offer up a lot of their depth at the plate to acquire young arms for the future. According to ESPN Boston, Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino and Jackie Bradley are all available. If Boston feels that any of those players are close to getting traded, they will pull them from the lineup in order to prevent injuries that could hinder deals from getting done.
With uncertainty on the roster, the Tigers and Red Sox face off both in needs of wins. Detroit will put Alfredo Simon on the mound after his last start saw him go 6.2 innings, giving up six hits and four runs during that time. He has a 4.63 ERA on the season while walking at least four batters for the fourth time in his last 18 starts. Control has been an issue as he has one of the worst walk rates since 2012.
Boston will go with Steven Wright on the mound as they sit at the bottom of the division. Wright went 5.0 innings in his last start while giving up six hits and six runs. Wright only has three wins on the year, but he has barely gotten any run support to improve the record. The Red Sox must start getting production at the plate in order to improve.
