The Dallas Cowboys have confidence in their run game. While doubt continues to pour in following the departure of DeMarco Murray, owner Jerry Jones believes in the players currently on the roster which consists of off-the-field risk Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden who is getting his third chance to make something happen in the NFL. While there is a belief the Cowboys will add another body during training camp, team insiders say that right now that is not the case.
Earlier in the week, the Cowboys announced the release of Ryan Williams following a procedure on his knee that would have delayed his start with the team. However, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the open roster spot does not mean the Cowboys will actively pursue Ray Rice or Chris Johnson. As of right now, those two running backs are the best available on the open market. According to ESPN's John Clayton, the Cowboys are the perfect landing spot for Rice while team vice president Stephen Jones admitted that Johnson was on the radar should Dallas have concerns in the ground game.
For now, the Cowboys will replace the NFL leading rusher with McFadden, Randle and Lance Dunbar who was at risk of being a roster cut, but now appears guaranteed to stay on. That means the Cowboys are really counting on these three running backs to really rise to the occasion in 2015 something that may or may not happen. According to Jones, Randle has the upper hand in the offense and is showing signs of being the starter for the beginning of the season.
"We have a player (in Randle) that has the potential -- and we based that on, not on what he did at Oklahoma State or how we drafted him, but by literally being a teammate around here for the last two years -- but he has the potential to be the kind of back that would step in there and be your No. 1 back," Jones said, via NFL.com. "If he were not here, then I wouldn't feel as good as we go into the season and what might happen."
According to the team owner, McFadden still has the skill set that allowed him to be drafted No.4 overall out of Arkansas. McFadden had two failed stints with the Oakland Raiders and is now seeking a third chance with the Cowboys. Jones believes that any running back can be successful behind this offensive line. He is about to find out just how true that statement is.
