The Houston Rockets are expected to sign free agent Jason Terry to a contract this offseason and the team has reportedly offered the guard a deal and he could add depth behind Patrick Beverley along with Ty Lawson after his trade from the Nuggets and this comes after the Rockets signed back Chuck Hayes to help Dwight Howard and James Harden up front.
Terry has been on the market all offseason and while the Mavericks showed some interest in the point guard, the Rockets have looked like his only realistic destination. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets have made an offer to Terry and while he has not officially accepted the deal, he is most likely coming back to the Rockets. Marc Stein at ESPN reported last week that even with the trade for Lawson, the team was likely to add Terry, as they gave up multiple guards in the trade.
The team dealt a depth option in Pablo Prigioni and now they could add Terry to play behind Beverley and Lawson. The team signed Beverley to a contract this offseason and now he is back for four years and Terry could return after playing in 77 games last season. Sure, Terry is 37 years old, but he comes in after averaging a solid seven points and two assists per game and that is all the Rockets will be asking for is some productive late minutes.
The Rockets made a deep playoff run last season and with Beverley injured at times last season, Terry provided some nice depth. He will have even less pressure with Lawson in the fold and that makes the move an even better fit for both sides. Terry has bounced around the past few years after a lengthy run with Dallas and now he could be back for another season with the Rockets.
The team has also brought back Chuck Hayes after he played with the Raptors and it comes after Hayes was with the Rockets from 2006 to 2011. According to Marc Spears at Yahoo, Hayes was signed for the veteran's minimum on a one year deal and he comes in after averaging two points and two rebounds per game in 29 games last season. Hayes adds depth up front for the Rockets and he could be a solid reserve option late in games.
According to Bobby Marks, the team still has room for Terry with 13 guaranteed deals on the books and the Rockets also are $2.5 million below the "tax apron" before adding anyone else. The team already has Trevor Ariza and Terrance Jones as well as Dwight Howard up front, but adding Hayes can definitely help. The Rockets also signed KJ McDaniels to a three-year, $10 million contract and the team thinks that he can blossom into a star.
