San Diego Chargers Rumors: Eric Weddle Gone After This Season With No New Contract In Training Camp?

Jul 31, 2015 02:35 PM EDT

Safety Eric Weddle has been the face of the Chargers secondary forever. He has been one of the few players that developed with the Chargers, and his been loyal throughout most of his career.

He has been named NFL first team or second team All Pro for five consecutive seasons. Weddle is also 30 years old and this makes the Chargers uneasy giving him any type of large, retire with the Chargers, type of deal because he is destined to decline.

It should be noted that in 2014 the Chargers picked up the 29 year old cornerback Brandon Flowers from free agency and paid him what he wanted. So if it's not a question of age or productivity than what is it? Well the Chargers have to either pay Phillip Rivers or find a new franchise quarterback and that's could be what is causing Weddle's delay.

The Chargers could feel comfortable with the cash they have left after getting a deal done with Rivers to extend Weddle with whatever is left. Weddle will get his money though, if not from the Chargers from another team more willing to bite the bullet and pay up big for a safety.
