MLB Rumors and Fantasy News: LA Angels Lose CJ Wilson For Season, New York Yankees Call Up Luis Severino

Aug 01, 2015 03:38 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels have lost pitcher CJ Wilson for the rest of the season with an elbow injury that needs surgery, while the NY Yankees called up prospect Luis Severino after not making a major trade at the deadline for more depth in the starting rotation after losing Michael Pineda to the DL with an injury.

Wilson was placed on the disabled list on Friday and now the Los Angeles Times reports that the pitcher will likely be out for the season after being diagnosed with a bone spur issue. Bill Shaikin reports that Wilson will need surgery to clean out the bone spur and it's "expected to end his season." The Angels are getting back Jered Weaver and the team also has Matt Shoemaker to stay in the rotation with Wilson out. Wilson put up a sub 4.00 ERA this season and had 110 strikeouts for the Angels in 132 innings of work while putting up an 8-8 record.

The Yankees have made some changes after the trade deadline despite not making any major deals on Friday, as ESPN New York reports that Luis Severino has been called up. The Yankees also called up Bryan Mitchell and it came after Michael Pineda was placed on the disabled list. The Yankees were connected to Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman at the deadline, but Brian Cashman did not make any major moves.

Severino is just 21 and he was one player that Cashman was unwilling to give up in deals at the deadline. The team considers Severino the top pitching prospect in the organization and the team likely would have had to give him up if there was a trade for Cole Hamels or David Price. Pineda will be out for at least a month for the Yankees and that could give Severino a chance to get some major league work. Based on reports, the Yankees and Padres had advanced discussions for Craig Kimbrel, but a trade did not work out, with Cashman saying the team was "not close," per ESPN New York.
