NFL Trade News: Pittsburgh Steelers Acquire Cornerback Brandon Boykin From Chip Kelly In Training Camp

Aug 03, 2015 12:37 PM EDT

It is reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have traded Brandon Boykin to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2016 conditional 5th round pick. This move was made by the Steelers to add some depth to a pretty thin secondary. Boykin had this to say about Chip Kelly,

"He can't relate and that makes him uncomfortable, he likes total control of everything, and he don't like to be uncomfortable. Players excel when you let them naturally be who they are, and in my experience that hasn't been important to him, but you guys have heard this before me. When you're a player, you want to be able to relate to your coach off the field. There were times he just didn't talk to people. ... I'm not saying he's a racist in any way."

Boykin's comments were not the first time Kelly has been bashed by former Eagles players but this time his response was relatively quick. Kelly stated

"He was stunned. I think he really wanted to be here. It more speaks to what our depth is at the position."

And on what Kelly thought of Boykin's comments

"It really did. I like Brandon. When he left, he gave me a hug."

Apparently the Steelers have targeted Boykin for months and were very happy to eventually make the deal. The Steelers have been rebuilding their secondary for some time now and after drafting Senquez Golson and Doran Grant, the Steelers have a competition going on at the starting spot. The current starters William Gay and Cortez Allen will have some competition before they reach the regular season. The Eagles are expected to have an open competition to see who gets Boykin's reps.
