The New York Giants got into a bit of a brawl in training camp, and this is not uncommon for the NFL. The fight started when defensive end Damontre Moore and offensive lineman Justin Pugh went after each other in 11 on 11 drills. Pugh was in because rookie 1st round pick Ereck Flowers was sitting out with a hip flexor. Pugh and Moore had been jawing at each other for most of the practice.
Brawls and training camp go together like lemonade and summer time, however sometimes these events have consequences that can go far beyond the boys will be boy's mentality. Tom Coughlin knows this best already losing several players in his career for unnecessary periods of time thanks to broken hands from training camp fights. Coughlin stated
"I have a problem with all of them; because they're out there swinging and in this day and age ... in the old days, they used to wrap it up and play with it. They don't do that anymore. I was upset about the fight and losing their temper. The bottom line is, you can't afford to do it."
Pugh had this to say in response
"He's right, he's right," Pugh said. "It's something that boils up when all offseason you can't put pads on and hit somebody. It's fun, you know. Like I said, I'm going to bring a fighter's mentality out there. Obviously, fighting, someone could get hurt, and that's something I definitely have to appreciate when coach says that. But at the same time, I'd rather coach yell at me for fighting someone than yell at me for not fighting someone. You know what I mean?"
