Currently the 49ers are looking to extend the troubled pass rusher, Aldon Smith, to a long term deal. 49ers general manager Trent Baalke has stated his belief that with some hard work the organization and Aldon Smith's representatives can come to terms on a new contract.
The 49ers have not had a more effective pass rusher in recent memory as Smith; he has 44 career sacks in 50 games. Smith is also 25 and not even in his prime yet, the pass rusher still has a significant amount of time left in the NFL.
Smith suspensions have always been a concern however the 49ers defensive unit cannot afford another star player leaving. The 49ers should sign Smith to a pretty large contract with some clauses in place to protect the team just in case Smith has another incident. The 49ers have already lost their defensive leader Patrick Willis and Chris Borland their young inside linebacker.
The 49ers have also dealt with NaVorro Bowman's severe injuries he suffered a horrific injury in the NFC Championship game 2 seasons ago. Now with Bowman looking like his old self the 49ers need to make sure they keep their other star in place.
