NFC East: Eagles Lose, Giants Take First Place in Standings

Oct 15, 2012 12:54 PM EDT

The defending Super Bowl champs are now sitting at the throne in the NFC East division after winning on Sunday agianst the mighty San Francisco 49ers.

It was a surprise that the Giants pulled off the win as the 49ers have one of the deadliest defenses in the league, but the Giants' defense stepped up in this one as they were the key in the 26-3 victory.

Sure, it did not help that Alex Smith was off target, throwing three interceptions in the game, but the 49ers had their chances to pick Eli Manning too.

The Giants' defense gave their team great field positioning, which led to four Lawrence Tynes field goals as the Giants cruised to victory.

Victor Cruz caught a touchdown and Dominik Hixon had a game-high 78 yards receiving. Ahmad Bradshaw had his second consecutive triple-digit running game as he went for 116 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, the Giants took advantage of the Philadelphia Eagles' loss to the Detroit Lions and now sit in first place.

Michael Vick and the Eagles continued to cough up the ball. They could not hold on to a 10-point lead with just about five minutes left to play in the game. Matt Stafford rallied his Lions to victory and won it on the legs of Jason Hanson.

The Eagles fell to the Lions 26-23 in overtime.

There is plenty of time for the Eagles to get back in it. In the meantime, the Giants have a chance to take a 1.5 game lead as they host the Washington Redskins in Week 7 and the Eagles have a bye week.

The Dallas Cowboys lost to the Baltimore Ravens in a close 31-29 battle and the Redskins surprised the Minnesota Vikings 38-26.
