The Detroit Tigers are looking good after defeating the New York Yankees 2-1 Tuesday night in Game 3 of the ALCS. Many thought the Yankees' new-look like lineup would have caused trouble, but Tiger ace Justin Verlander was not startled.
The 2011 Cy Young Award winner and MVP went 8.1 innings allowing three hits, one run, no walks and only struck out three.
The Tigers did not feast on Yankee pitching, but Delmon Young continued his playoff tear hitting a fourth inning solo homer on a line drive shot to left field.
Miguel Cabrera could not stay away from the party hitting a liner to center field that soared over the head of Curtis Granderson driving in Quentin Berry who reached on an error by third baseman Eric Chavez.
Later in the game, Chavez redeemed himself snagging a hot shot by Miguel Cabrera and turning an inning ended double play with the bases loaded.
The loss is bad news for the Yankees as they continued to struggle in the game. The only two hitters who got solid hits for the Yankees were Ichiro Suzuki and Eduardo Nunez. Ichiro went 2-3 in the game with two singles and Nunez hit a solo shot in the ninth.
With the home run, Nunez broke Verlander's 23 consecutive innings of soreless baseball. The last time he gave up a run was a leadoff home run to Coco Crisp in Game 1.
Phil Coke came in to close the game. Mark Teixeira reached with a single and then Robinson Cano reached on a single to left, breaking his 0-26 slump. Phil Coke then struck out Raul Ibanez on a slider to end the game.
Taking the mound for the Yankees tomorrow is their ace CC Sabathia. On the mound for the Tigers and getting the first crack at a World Series berth will be Max Scherzer.
