The Dallas Cowboys have signed two running backs, Ben Malena and Michael Hill.
This is Malena's second time on the Cowboys, the first being last year when he was waived during training camp. This is Hill's first time being on the Cowboys however it is not his first time in the NFL; he has had multiple stints with teams during training camp.
This move was likely brought on by the injuries to Lance Dunbar, Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle, and Gus Johnson. Randle is the expected starter and McFadden is set to be the second on the depth chart.
McFadden just cannot seem to stay healthy so the Cowboy's concerns with him are growing. McFadden returned to practice on Sunday but if he gets injured again the Cowboys could be looking elsewhere for production. Dunbar is the change of pace back and he suffered an ankle sprain during training camp, he returned on Sunday as well. Gus Johnson was the undrafted free agent that suddenly got Cowboy's fans excited with his strength and quick burst down the field.
Johnson in his first preseason game suffered a minor AC joint separation that will require him to miss practice and all contact for a week if not more. Lastly Lache Seastrunk another UDFA running back has failed to impress the coaching staff and does not understand what to do on passing downs, this may lead to his release. This leaves Malena and Hill to fight their way up the depth chart.
