The exact date of when newly acquired Los Angeles Lakers All-Star center Dwight Howard will make is Lakers debut is still up in the air, but Howard is eyeing Sunday evening's game at Staples Center as his start with his new team.

Howard, who underwent back surgery to repair a herniated disk in April, said recently that he wasn't able to run until just before the start of training camp.

According to ESPNLosAngeles.com, sources close to Howard say that he's told friends and teammates that he's hoping to take the court Sunday in the exhibition against the Sacramento Kings.

Yahoo! Sports reported late Thursday night that the Lakers have targeted Sunday for Howard's debut and are hoping he'll play in two of their final three exhibition games after Friday, barring any setbacks.

Howard was ruled out of Friday's game against the Kings in Las Vegas but has been participating in full contact practices for the past week. He has said it's just a matter of increasing his conditioning to a level at which he won't risk a separate injury.

The Lakers have four more exhibition games before their Oct. 30 season opener against the Dallas Mavericks: Friday in Las Vegas; Sunday at Staples Center; Wednesday against the Clippers at Staples Center; and Thursday against the Kings in San Diego.
