Over the past few seasons injuries have been the major downfall of the Atlanta Falcons. Whether it was on the offensive line or in the pass rush, injuries have been a critical factor in the lack of success. The Falcons are hoping to avoid that this season as they loaded up on depth in free agency and the NFL Draft, but already a top star is being sidelined. With Roddy White out for the remainder of the preseason, who steps up to fill his shoes?
According to ESPN's Vaughn McClure, White underwent minor surgery to fix a right elbow injury, but will be on track to start the first game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles. White has reportedly been experiencing swelling in his elbow due to loose particles and the surgery will fix the problem. Head coach Dan Quinn made it clear that White will be back Week 1 and will be completely fine, but in the meantime his absence gives others a chance to step up.
The main competition for the starting third receiver is quickly being won by veteran Leonard Hankerson who is quickly looking like the steal of free agency. Hankerson had a 2-yard touchdown catch against the New York Jets while continuing to thrive under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan whom he worked with in Washington. Hankerson told the media that he is simply trying to help any way that he can.
"I mean, my job is to just go out there and do whatever I can, whatever is possible, to help the team out," Hankerson said, via ESPN.com. "Whether it's making a block, whether it's special teams, whether it's catching the ball or whether it's coaching up young guys, I feel like I can bring a lot to the team. Whatever I'm called upon to do, that's what I'll do."
Justin Hardy is also going to see more playing time. The rookie has been making a positive impression so far in training camp and in the preseason. Quarterback Matt Ryan praised Hardy for his work ethic and ability to pick up the offense so far in the league. Many believe Hardy could be a starter for the Falcons, but Hankerson has the lead. McClure writes that Nick Williams is another player that could be a huge factor while White is out. Another former Redskins player, Williams has shown some flash in the preseason that has the Falcons confident in his abilities moving forward. Devin Hester and Eric Weems will also get more playing time alongside Julio Jones.
"It totally -- when a guy of Roddy's caliber is not out there, yeah, you're bummed that you're not able to have him there -- but these matchups that you love to see the opportunities for guys, and Nick's a great example of that, of somebody who just keeps competing and battling for it," Quinn said, via ESPN.com. "Yeah, he's somebody that we definitely want to keep looking at. He's just one of the guys who he keeps running the routes, keeps ripping it. It's also an opportunity for Justin Hardy."
