NY Yankees Rumors: James Shields Traded if CC Sabathia Out for Season? Ian Kennedy, Tyson Ross Options After Masahiro Tanaka, Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda Doubt

The New York Yankees were trying to remain positive when CC Sabathia was removed early from his Sunday start. The pitcher was experiencing pain in his surgically repaired knee and it was simply too much for him to overcome. After undergoing an MRI on the issue the Yankees were forced to move the pitcher to the disabled list while hope is not high that Sabathia returns this season. Is it time for New York to give in to a trade?

According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, manager Joe Girardi has some doubt that Sabathia returns this season. The manager made it clear that the team was not throwing in the towel on Sabathia year, but considering how ineffective the pitcher has been this year so far, the Yankees might be wise to let him heal. So where does that leave the pitching rotation with the playoffs around the corner and New York sits ½ game out of first place in the American League East?

The Yankees have some risks even with the players that are healthy. Nathan Eovaldi has been the most consistent. Luis Severino is the star of the moment. Michael Pineda is making his way back from the disabled list. Masahiro Tanaka and Ivan Nova are struggling with consistency while they heal from previous injuries. Considering there are legitimate concerns regarding the rotation, the Yankees might have to pull the trigger on a trade, something they have been hesitant to do.

The Yankees stayed put at the trade deadline and have yet to make a move at the waiver deadline which is just days away. General manager Brian Cashman has made it clear that he does not want to give up prospects to get another player on the roster nor does he want to acquire a heavy contract. However, at this point he might not have another choice if the Yankees intend on being contenders this year.

James Shields is said to be available according to NJ.com. The San Diego Padres have been trying to dump off the pitcher as they became sellers at the trade deadline. He is currently having his worst season since 2010, but he is healthy and he would be an upgrade for New York. Ian Kennedy could also be available for the Padres. Tyson Ross has cleared waivers. San Diego would likely seek out at least one pitcher trade before the waiver deadline and either option would be a quality addition for New York. The Yankees might regret not making a move for an elite arm at the trade deadline, but they have a chance to at least acquire depth before the waiver deadline.
