The SEC has long been considered the best conference in college football after winning six straight national championships.
Last season the conference reached its greatest heights, with two teams from the conference going against each other in the championship game in Alabama and LSU. This season the Crimson Tide is the presumptive number one team and should remain undefeated through the year until the SEC title game.
The question is, which team will they face when it's all said and done? This weekend's matchup between the Florida Gators and the South Carolina Gamecocks may help decide. The two teams are both in the SEC East, while Alabama is in the SEC West.
Florida is currently 5-0 in the conference, while South Carolina is 4-1 after suffering its first loss of the season last week against LSU. The Gamecocks can regain a share of first place in the division with a win on Saturday and put themselves in an excellent position to make the SEC title game.
The Gators enter the game as the No. 2 ranked team in the BCS and are 6-0 for the first time since winning the national championship three years ago.
"At the end of the day, we're about winning championships on and off the field here at Florida, and it's another step to Atlanta," coach Will Muschamp said.
Gators sophomore quarterback Jeff Driskel has been a surprise for Florida this season, throwing for over 800 yards and rushing for 326 with four touchdowns. Last week he had an excellent game against Vanderbilt, running for 177 yards and three touchdowns.
The team lost two offensive lineman to injury in that game, with center Jon Harrison suffering and arm injury and left tackle Xavier Nixon hurting his upper body.
"We're hopeful to have all those guys back," Muschamp said. "They're all definitely going to be fine or probable at the worst."
Florida has been successful rushing the ball this season, ranking 14th in the nation with 233 yards per game. Running back Mike Gillisee has been strong all year, rushing for 615 yards and seven touchdowns.
The team has also been great defensively, allowing only 12.3 points per game.
South Carolina might be shorthanded come Saturday, with running back Marus Lattimore limited after suffering a hip injury.
"We're sort of banged up all of a sudden," Spurrier said.
Lattimore is one of the most explosive players on South Carolina and has rushed for 584 yards this season and has scored 10 touchdowns. Last week he had a rough game in the loss against LSU, gaining only 35 yards on 13 carries.
"It's not surgery-type things," Spurrier said of Lattimore's condition. "It appears it's something that'll be fine in a week or so."
Lattimore has averaged 4.5 yards a carry this season, but Florida has a talented rush defense that could stop him in his tracks if he plays. Florida is ranked in the top 20 in rush defense, giving up only 107 yards per game.
South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw will have to have a big game for the Gamecocks to win, especially if Lattimore is injured. Shaw threw for only 177 yards against LSU last week and also had two interceptions. It was his first multi-interception game this season.
The Gators have a favorable upcoming schedule, with four of the next five games coming at home. The team finishes the season on the road at Florida State, who is currently ranked No. 14.
