Despite all of the criticism and doubt, Robert Griffin III remains the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins and head coach Jay Gruden is making it clear that he fully supports that decision. A lot has been made about Griffin who suffered a concussion in the team's second preseason game after getting no protection from the offensive line. With Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy biting at his heels to earn the starting spot, Gruden stands in the corner of his quarterback for the time being.
After getting taken out due to injury, many wondered if Griffin was long for the starting job this year. Cousins and McCoy came in and played cleanup while excelling in the process. Despite the talent behind Griffin, Gruden stands behind the quarterback and has faith in his talents.
"That's just how we decided to do it," Gruden said, via the Washington Post. "We just have to make sure we do our best to put Robert in a good place, with play calls and and getting things going offensively. Hats off to Kirk and Colt. They've taken advantage of their opportunities in the second, third and fourth quarters and done some great things out here in practice every day. Robert's done some good things out here in practice, and we're judging - not just three drives in preseason games, but the performance through OTAs, training camp, and that's why we're going the way we're going."
According to the Washington Post, Griffin is on track to play against the Baltimore Ravens despite suffering the concussion, pushing Cousins and McCoy to backup roles once again. Both quarterbacks are entering the final years of their contracts and have been vocal about their desires to start. However, the Redskins are showing no desires to trade or release either option knowing Griffin's injury history makes both players critical to the roster.
Griffin is going to have to play better than he has if Washington is going to contend. The team will get some relief as DeSean Jackson makes his way back to the field following a shoulder injury. With Niles Paul out for the season, the Redskins need all of the receiving help they can get. According to Jackson, he will be ready to go for Week 1.
"I think I'll be ready to go," Jackson said, via the team's website. "You won't have to worry about me at all. I'll be the same person I've always been, making plays and being the guy that brings the energy to this team."
Jackson and Pierre Garcon will continue as the main receiving targets. Matt Jones and Alfred Morris continue to battle following the loss of Silas Redd. All of these players will be critical for Griffin this year.
